📜 Historical overview

🔹 Origins: According to local legend, in the 16th century a group of Kryvichs from northern Lithuania settled here, enchanted by the surrounding landscapes. The name is also linked to nearby oak forests.
🔹 Foundation: The village was established around 1532. The first written record dates from 1568, when King Sigismund Augustus granted the village (then called Żarywiec) to the Kleszczele włość (estate).
🔹 Royal village: In 1795, Dubicze Cerkiewne was a royal village within the Kleszczele starostwo in Bielsk Land.
🔹 Interwar period: The village belonged to the commune of Orla. The 1921 census recorded 196 inhabitants, of whom 191 declared Belarusian nationality and all 196 were Orthodox. In the 1920s Baptist and Pentecostal communities appeared.
🔹 World War II: In June 1941, a clash between German and Soviet troops led to fires that partially destroyed Dubicze and the nearby village of Grabowiec. The 17th-century Uniate church was burnt down.
🔹 Post-war period: In 1956 the village was electrified and a public library was opened. In 1977, the Commune Office and Health Centre buildings were constructed. In 1985, a monument to 27 Red Army soldiers was erected and later dismantled in 2018 as a symbol of the communist past.
